Here in NJ it is cold, icy, and we have more snow in the forecast over the next week or so. That gets me thinking of a vacation in a warmer climate. Where are we going this year? I haven’t decided yet. But it got me thinking of the trip that started it all.
A good friend of mine lives in Southern Maine and 10 years ago we made the drive in summer up to his house to spend several days with his family. I remember the drive up was fine…with stops in CT for lunch and a pitstop in Portsmouth, NH to see the USS Albacore submarine. The drive home was complete hell due to summer traffic…I wouldn’t recommend doing that drive on a Sunday. It’s about a 6 hour drive. We stopped in Mystic, CT (obviously had to have some Mystic Pizza) and went to the Aquarium. It was all good until we had to get through all of CT and parts of NY on the way back to NJ. Trip took about 12 hours. It’s why we fly when we can now.
However, the time spent in Maine was fantastic and it truly is a great spot to vacation in summer. Maine has definitely earned the title “Vacationland” during Summer.
We visited the Maine Lighthouse, attended a Lobster Bake, took a ferry across Casco Bay to Peaks Island, played golf, swam…it was a terrific first family trip away.
So despite the long, awful journey home, it didn’t spoil the love for travel and seeing new things and having new experiences for the kids.
I had to really search for some pictures from this trip because it was 10 years ago but I found a few to share. Enjoy and start planning that next family vacation yourself!!
