The cost of craft beer….

To my dear, fellow, craft beer nerds….

How much is too much for craft beer? I ask this question because I was at my son’s baseball tournament this weekend and we were less than 10 minutes from Kane Brewing, which is still one of the best and most consistent breweries in NJ. I had to stop in and reload as the bar fridge was looking a bit sparse.

I picked out a Lager and then 5 different IPAs (one of those being a 10.2% triple IPA) to round out my case….total…$125. Pricey to say the least. As good as their beer is, it’s probably a bit overpriced.

4 packs of craft beer typically range between $12-$20. The places that get it right, in my opinion, are the ones that charge by the ABV%. Should a 10.2% Triple IPA cost maybe $22? Sure. Should a 4.8% Lager cost $20? No way!

There are plenty of breweries out there that get that concept and do it right. I looked this morning at Treehouse Brewing (still far and away my favorite brewery). Their flagship beers, Green and Julius (both IPAs at 7.5% and 6.8%) are reasonably priced at $16.40 for a 4 pack. Their other flagship…and my favorite, Haze, is an 8.2% DIPA for $18.40. Worth EVERY cent of that.

I have my favorite beers and obviously they are worth what we think they’re worth. But how much is too much in your opinion? Thoughts??
