First and only post of the week because I just returned from St. Thomas. But let me tell you that it was a wonderful and relaxing few days living the Island Life. If you have never been to St. Thomas, it is definitely worth it. Because it wasn’t peak season yet, the beaches, restaurants, activities, etc were nowhere near as crowded as they will be a month from now. But that is the joy of traveling in less crowded times. Even our departure was smooth going through security and customs (for the record: yes…even though St Thomas is a US territory, you still have to go through US customs on the return trip).
Early November is still the end of Hurricane season and is considered their rainy month. In 4 days, we only endured a brief rain shower. The rest of the week was sunny, warm, and beautiful.
So what will you experience in St. Thomas? Here’s a quick rundown but feel free to message me if you need anything else.
Island is filled with feral cats, roosters, iguanas, lots of birds that sing to the full moon at night. Also saw some deer, a mongoose, various little lizards, dogs (no strays..all had collars on but tend to roam a bit). We pretty much jumped into any body of water and saw multiple species of fish and plenty of sea turtles which are just amazing. We swam/snorkeled at Magens Bay, Hulls Bay, and Brewers Beach.
The roads are tight, lots of potholes, and many areas have a speed limit of 10mph even though the locals will ride your bumper at times trying to triple that speed limit. Drive on the left side…as we saw one tourist driver forget in Red Hook and smash a headlight into a tour bus.
Everyone we encountered that falls within the category of “tourism” was incredibly kind and helpful. Didn’t find the locals to be outwardly friendly but certainly not unfriendly either.
The food was all very good and the local beer from Leatherback is a decent craft brewery. We found Reef Life IPA to be their best.
Other than hitting the beaches, we also did a Zip Line tour which was a lot of fun. Great guides and amazing views!
It was a perfect brief getaway and it was great that we could fly direct on United from Newark Liberty Int airport to St. Thomas is just about 4 hours.
Message me if you need any specific recommendations on restaurants, rental cars, accommodations, etc. Have a great weekend!!
