So it’s the day after the colonoscopy. I understand that everyone will have a different experience and I can only speak to mine. But it was pretty simple and easy to be honest.

Everyone says the prep is the worst part. Maybe I have a decent gut or they’ve improved the prep over the last few years. The volume of liquid wasn’t unbearable at all. It definitely helps to drink whatever they tell you ice cold though. And even though I wasn’t wandering too far from the bathroom, there were no “emergencies”. I found time in between “runs” by passing the time playing on Mikey’s Playstation, tossing the ball to the dogs in the yard, or watching baseball playoffs and some hockey games (Deke was by my side the entire time).

My procedure was moved up to 1pm and this was actually the perfect time. I didn’t find myself overly hungry which was a surprise. And the benefit of the 1pm time was that I didn’t have to wake up in the middle of the night to finish the “split prep”. Got up at 7am after a good night’s sleep, finished the prep by 7:30-8am and just hung out until we had to go to the endoscopy center.

Got checked in, changed into my fancy gown, met the Dr. and nurses. Had an IV line put in my right hand for the meds. They wheeled me to the room, asked me the same questions a million times (name, DOB, what are you here for). They asked me to roll onto my left side. The nurse anesthetist hooked the line to my IV and said she was going to inject the meds and that I may feel a burning sensation. I got this warm fuzzy feeling all over my body and then it was light’s out!

I woke up in recovery less that 30 minutes later. It was really quick. The nurse came in, said I did great, and got me some juice to drink. I got dressed and they moved me to a chair where I received my papers and the doctor came over and explained how it went and what to expect over next 24 hrs. The effects of the propofol? The best way I can explain it….it was like having a very pleasant 3 beer buzz going. HAHA!! Not unpleasant at all.

By the time Mary picked me up and got me home, that had warn off and I was just hungry and a bit tired. Otherwise, no big deal and I’m back to 100% normal today. It was like nothing ever happened. But I know I did my due diligence. Don’t let the preventable stuff get you!

Cancers with highly effective screening include breast, colorectal, cervical, and lung cancer, as screening can detect cancers early, when they are most treatable, and sometimes even prevent them by finding precancerous growths. I’ll add visiting your dermatologist regularly as well as they can detect early skin cancer.

Have you had your screenings done? If not, don’t hesitate. Schedule it ASAP if you are due….it just may save your life!
