Bear Market/Recession and the NCAA Championship

Here we are on Monday morning….following up last week’s stock market disaster which looks to continue into this week. And what topic has 5+ times the amount of searches on Google Trends vs the stock market today? The Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship game tonight. What that shows me is that the younger generations aren’t very concerned about the possible recession we are about to enter and care more about if Florida or Houston is going to win tonight. (On a side note, I’m surprised Alex Ovechkin didn’t make the list as he became the NHLs leading goal scorer of all time yesterday)

But for the younger generation or for those of you that aren’t nearing retirement age….time to take advantage of these “rock bottom” prices on some great stocks. You can load up on some quality ETF dividend stocks and be pretty sure everything will bounce back and correct itself long before you even contemplate retirement. Even some of the major S & P 500 growth stocks like VOO are nearing their 52 week low today and down almost 20% in the last 3 months.

For people closer to retirement or people like my parents who are already retired….I’m not sure what to say honestly. This week is going to be rough…and it could continue for the next 4 years. If anyone could predict the market short term, we would all be rich. But at least those of us who have many more years of working and will see the market eventually continue along its long term trend line….don’t panic. Invest and trust that history will continue to repeat itself and that this is just a big hiccup to get through.
