Badlands

I think one of the hikes that really started things off for Emily was our trip to South Dakota years ago. We did some amazing hikes while there but the first one we did was The Notch Trail in The Badlands. Coming from the East Coast, there is nothing like hiking out West and this was a real eye opener for the kids. Shortly into the hike, you come across this ladder climb:

Heights and this climb was not in the cards for Mary. The kids and I headed up the ladder and when we got the top, Mikey looked down and just said “Nope..take me down”. He was much younger then, and that look back down was intimidating, so I took him safely back down and then headed back up again to join Emily.

Each turn was a new adventure with some exciting (dangerous) drops very near. Emily was also quite young at the time but I could see how much she was loving it. This “Out and Back” trail stopped at a peak with some amazing views and this is where Emily and I started our tradition of our hiking selfie pictures. One day I’ll gather every one of them and post it and definitely make a collage for her of all our hiking memories. Every hike we do together is special but this one will always hold a place in my heart because it’s where it began.
