America the Beautiful?

OK…so I’m not here to talk about what side of the political fence you stand on. We are all aware that we have an extremely polarizing President here in the United States.

As someone who loves to hike and appreciates the beauty and wonder of our gorgeous National Parks here, I need to address the new 2026 America the Beautiful Parks Pass for US Residents.

For anyone not aware, we have these passes available for any 12 month period that allows us access to all of our National Parks and many other state parks for the price of $80. If you visit just a few each year, the card is worth it. And even if I don’t, it supports our parks system which is wonderful.

Each year the pass has always been a winning photo taken from an artist from one of the National Parks. Below shows the last few years. This year we basically have a picture from a one dollar bill with President George Washington and in addition our current President Trump. For the record, I’m not a fan of this new pass image. You can formulate your own opinion and feel free to let me know by posting a comment.

But IF you are going to put your face on this pass….at least freaking smile!! We would all care to feel like we are at least welcome in our own National Parks. And don’t even think of putting a sticker over it…you could invalidate it!

America the Beautiful passes with stickers might be voided in 2026, as the National Park Service (NPS) updated rules to consider defacing the pass (including adding stickers) as altering it, potentially covering security features, and rangers can charge entry fees or replace the pass at their discretion. This comes after new 2026 passes feature President Trump, prompting artists to sell stickers for covering the image, with some recommending clear sleeves for protection while still supporting park foundations.

Why the Sticker Issue is Happening

  • New Pass Design: The 2026 America the Beautiful Pass features President Donald Trump’s image, sparking public reaction.
  • Alteration Policy: The Department of the Interior updated guidelines to state that adding stickers or coverings counts as altering the pass, which can invalidate it.
  • Security Features: Officials claim stickers can cover security holograms and microprinting, though critics suggest the real issue is covering the President’s face for political reasons.

What to Do About Stickers

  • Risk of Voiding: Putting stickers directly on the card risks rangers deeming it invalid, requiring a day pass purchase or replacement.
  • Protective Sleeves: Artists offer clear vinyl sleeves designed to fit over the pass, allowing you to cover the image without directly altering the card, thus avoiding invalidation.
  • Check with Rangers: Ultimately, it’s up to the park’s discretion if a pass with stickers is valid.
