With the holiday season approaching, many of us will be gathering with family over the next couple months. Thanksgiving is just around the corner for us and it makes me think back to the traditions we started years ago surrounding this holiday.
The most long standing tradition, and we’ve been doing this for such a long time, is that we watch the movie Planes, Trains, and Automobiles as a family the night before Thanksgiving. Such a great movie and we can pretty much quote the entire movie from start to finish. But add in a pizza dinner (who wants to cook the night before Thanksgiving?) and a few good beers…and it’s the perfect kickoff to the holiday!
Like most college kids, we used to come home and go bar hopping with our old high school buddies on that Wednesday night as well. However, after that, my brother and I had another “tradition”. I would pack up my PlayStation (the original one) and bring it back to my parents house. We would hook that console up in the living room, keep drinking some beers, and play PlayStation MLB or NCAA football games until the sun practically came up. As we got older, married, and started having children….that one was not as long lasting. But great memories they are!!
What traditions do you celebrate around the holidays? Anything unique or special? Feel free to share in the comments.
Here is an old picture from late 90s of my parents, my brother, and I at a University of Maryland football tailgate party. Definitely falls into the years of those late night PlayStation drinking sessions with my brother.
