Who doesn’t love an update about dogs and pictures of them? Well I do…so here’s Deke and Delaney information.
Weather was warm enough last weekend and probably again over the next two days here to take them swimming. This past Friday was the first day back in the pool this season and Deke knows the routine. He sees me put on a bathing suit and awaits getting his “swim collar” on. This is just another dog collar but he knows the difference. We did the same for Delaney but she didn’t have a clue.
Deke went outside, stood by the pool gate as usual. Gate opens…he runs the long way counter clockwise, jumps the diving board, and heads towards the steps. (He learned very quickly that the steps is his way in and out and also to avoid ripping the liner with his nails). I didn’t take any pictures of videos because I was in the pool but I will definitely post some of him doing this soon.
He jumped right in and grabbed his tennis ball like he was just swimming the day before.
Delaney wasn’t scared of the water, but she definitely didn’t jump in either. She stayed around the pool for over an hour just playing and circling and watching Deke. For a while there I thought maybe I had a new breed of dog…a Portuguese Land Dog. But finally after 2 hours, she eased herself down the steps and swam out for a tennis ball retrieval with Deke. She is definitely a natural in water as expected. She took a couple plunges and that was it. We didn’t want to force her too much and allow her to do it at her own pace. She is a Portuguese Water Dog after all….she will grow to love the pool…I have no doubts.
One of the things we go through on a constant basis (many dog owners can attest) is tennis balls. They rip them to shreds (especially Delaney) and the pool water weakens them too. I love all things made by Kong as they are pretty tough for the most part…but no one can make a tennis ball that can’t be destroyed by a motivated dog. I constantly buy these for half the price and twice the amount. Definitely a great purchase:
