Deke and Delaney have as different personalities as do Emily and Mikey. Siblings who grow up together will get along at times, fight at times, drive each other crazy, but ultimately love each other. As I previously mentioned, Deke and Delaney were not best friends from day one. Delaney was the annoying new puppy. Deke had his world flipped upside down since he had been the only dog in the house for the first 4 years of his life. I saw them turn the corner somewhere around the 2-3 month mark. This seems to be the sweet spot for when all new dogs and current dogs start to figure things out.
Deke and Delaney have definitely figured things out. Does Delaney still drive Deke crazy at times? Hell yes. She’s still a 10 month old, super high energy breed, that likes to push Deke into playing by grabbing at his ears and back legs. We have close to probably 30 chew bones in this house and which one does Delaney prefer? The one Deke has….even if the free pile of 29 other bones is right next to her. She’s just being a puppy. Deke remains a very sweet, patient, big brother.
But I can see that they have bonded and love each other. If I have one of them in the yard…the other is looking for him/her. If I’m out cutting the lawn, the two of them are side by side at the window watching together. We do allow both of them plenty of separate time which I think is healthy too. When I’m working in my office, it’s just Deke and I. We still take them for separate walks each day too. This all seems to work out just fine.
When I looked through my pictures lately, I noticed I had way more of the two of them together than I did early on. I’d love to share a few. Happy Wednesday!
