Ahhh….the business trip. Luxury accommodations, first class flights, glamorous dinners, party all night…it’s basically a vacation. These are all the things I’ve heard over the years from people when I’m heading away on a trip for work like I am this week. (so I won’t be posting this week beyond today..sorry).
The truth is that business trips used to be kind of fun when I was young and single and could stay up late drinking with friends and meetings were held in places like Las Vegas and guidelines were much more relaxed. For the last 20+ years….business trips just flat out suck. My flight has already been delayed twice (luckily I haven’t left the house yet). Warm weather location? Who cares because the inside of a conference room looks and feels the same anywhere I’ve ever been. Mass produced food for large groups? Average at best. Drinking at receptions? Never want to take the risk of having one too many and actually telling co-workers and executives what I really think about them. Taking my son to hockey and baseball practices this week, playing my own hockey game with my beer league buddies, walking the dogs,….that is really what I’d prefer.
But the job pays the bills and kills time between vacations. So I can go fake it for a few days and then get back to reality.
So for all you other Dads out there who endure the same awful business trips and sales meetings….I feel for you and completely understand these are not “vacations”!
Enjoy the week everyone!
